Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1960-1965
Interior of Covent Garden Opera House
Wylie's painting is a close-up interior view of the Covent Garden Opera House. The artist has selected an upper corner of the stage and focused on the top of the proscenium arch and the gallery front. A crest of arms can be seen on the left hand side of the painting and a standing gentleman can just be seen in the shadows of the box on the left.
During the 1960s, several renovations of the Covent Garden Opera House took place, including improvements to the amphitheatre and an extension in the rear. This preceded a more ambitious project to modernise the building which took place between 1996 and 2000.
Nothing much is known about the artist Raymond Wylie, who was active during the 1960s. On the evidence of this canvas, he was influenced by the Camden Town Group of painters and Walter Sickert in particular.
