Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1961
Covent Garden Opera House
This interior view of the Covent Garden Opera House looks across the orchestra pit towards the stage boxes. The musicians and conductor are seen near the stage which is concealed behind a red curtain. The crowd of seated onlookers is rendered as a blur.
Nothing much is known about the artist Raymond Wylie, who was active during the 1960s. On the evidence of this canvas, he was influenced by the Camden Town Group of painters and Walter Sickert, in particular.
