Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1834
The Palace of Westminster on Fire
The fire which blazed in the Palace of Westminster on 16 October 1834 was the greatest to hit London since the Great Fire of 1666. It burnt the vast majority of the building to the ground.
This painting depicts the fire at night, through the first arch of Westminster Bridge and looking towards the burning Palace. People are seen in boats and climbing down the sides of the bridge while the fire burns in the distance, under a full moon. The two square towers on the right are those of the western facade of Westminster Abbey.
