Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1954
Tolmers Square, St Pancras
This view looks south towards 14 and 15 Tolmers Square; on the left is an alleyway which leads into Gower Street and on the right is the back of Tolmers cinema. Two young girls can be seen playing by some railings, with a black cat nearby. Shadows fall across the foreground of the painting but the background is illuminated by bright sunlight. Situated just north of Euston Road, Tolmers Square has a turbulent history which belies the subdued and peaceful scene depicted here.
Following the outbreak of the First World War, many shops run by Londoners with German names were attacked and looted, including those on this site. A few years after this view was painted, plans to redevelop the area for offices and for commercial purposes were drawn up. The plans to empty and, where possible, demolish properties met with increasing opposition and a battle between residents and the developers ensued. Eventually the land was developed as a housing estate.
