The Palace of Westminster from the River after the Fire of 1834
This painting records the aftermath of the fire which blazed on the night of 16 October 1834, destroying the old Palace of Westminster.
The smouldering buildings are, from left to right, a modern block containing parliamentary offices, the 13th century Painted Chamber, the Library of the House of Commons, the residence of the Clerk of the House of Commons, St. Stephen's Chapel, and the Speaker's residence.
While all of the aforementioned buildings were almost completely destroyed by the Great Fire, Westminster Abbey and Westminster Hall (seen behind) were left in tact.
