Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1961
Hyde Park Corner, 1961
The Hyde Park Corner underpass connecting Knightsbridge with Piccadilly opened in 1962. As the first large-scale underpass for road traffic in central London, it marked the beginning of the 1960's enthusiasm for inner-city motorways.
The underpass is shown here under construction, as a series of interconnected structures. It was one section of the wider Marble Arch - Park Lane - Hyde Park Corner improvements which were designed to ease traffic congestion in central London. Beyond the massive girders, cranes and trucks, the Hyde Park Corner screen and Apsley House can be seen in the background.
Better known as a painter of nudes, Bernard Dunstan has also depicted interiors and town scenes. Born in Teddington, he studied at Byam Shaw and Slade Art Schools and married the painter Diana Armfield.
