The Strand, Looking Eastwards from Exeter Change
Stanley's painting depicts the Strand looking eastwards towards St. Mary-le-Strand, built by James Gibbs in 1714-7, and St. Clement Danes, built by Sir Christopher Wren in 1680-82. Savoy Street is on the extreme right and in the middle distance is Wellington Street.
Exeter Change, from which this viewpoint was taken, was an arcade of shops on two levels. Built in 1676, it was demolished at the time of the Strand improvements in 1829. At this date, however, the Strand was still one of London's principal shopping streets. Two street sellers operate on either side of the street and there is a cab stand in front of St. Mary-le-Strand.
Caleb Stanley ( 1795-1868) was a landscape painter and watercolourist who exhibited mainly at the British Institution.
