Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1909
Queen Victoria, 1859
George Sephton's portrait of Queen Victoria is a partial copy of a full-length original by Franz Xaver Winterhalter in Buckingham Palace. The Queen is shown wearing Coronation robes and the crown of state which was especially made for her coronation. The Imperial State Crown has been placed on a table on the right, partly obscuring a view of the Houses of Parliament, which can be glimpsed through a window behind.
Seated at three-quarter length, Queen Victoria is portrayed facing the viewer with one hand resting on the chair's arm and the other holding some official documents. As well as wearing George IV's circlet, the Queen has on her new collet necklace and earrings and a portrait bracelet of Prince Albert, her husband.
