Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1771-1780
Covent Garden Piazza and Market
Taken from the east side, Collet's painting looks towards the church of St. Paul, Covent Garden, and focuses on the market which dominates the centre. The full-range of sheds and two-storeyed market buildings are shown, as well as carts lining the roadway and sedan-chairs under 'piazzas'. Beyond St. Paul's Church (which is disproportionate in size), the spire of St. Martin-in-the-Field is visible.
An admirer and imitator of Hogarth, Collet has portrayed the familiar denizens of the city, including a street musician, a pick-pocket and a chair mender in the right foreground. Best known for his scenes of London life, Collet also painted narrative and genre scenes. There was a considerable demand for his genre paintings and many were engraved.
