Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1927
Portrait of Mrs. Richard Marsden Pankhurst, nee Emmeline Goulden (1858-1928)
Portrait of Emmeline Pankhurst painted by Georgina Brackenbury just one year before the death of the suffragette leader. Georgina Brackenbury suspended her artistic career for seven years to dedicate her life to the militant suffragette campaign. With her sister Marie (1866-1946) she was an active member and speaker of the Women's Social and Political Union. The sisters were twice imprisoned for militancy and their mother Hilda (1832-1918) also joined her daughters in prison at the age of 80. The family home in Kensington's Campden Hill Square became known as 'Mouse Castle'. It acted as a nursing home for hunger-striking suffragettes ('mice') released from prison, and a refuge for those on the run from police.
A copy of this portrait is in the National Portrait Gallery (2360).
