Putney Bridge and Village from Fulham
Putney's old wooden bridge is shown beside the main toll-house, or Bridge House, situated at the Fulham end. The bell seen under the roof was used to warn of approaching highwaymen. Across the river are the houses of Putney and St. Mary's parish church. On the right is the Swan Inn, where the bridge commissioners held their first meeting on 26 July 1726.
The painter of this picture may have based his canvas on an engraving after J.B.C Chatelain which was published in 1750 and depicts the scene from exactly the same viewpoint. This remains, however, the earliest painted picture of the bridge.
