Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1905-1910
Portrait of Sir Henry Irving
A hugely successful actor and theatre manager, Sir Henry Irving was the first actor to be honoured with a knighthood in 1895. He starred in numerous productions throughout the nineteenth century, including 'Two Roses', 'Rob Roy' and the Shakespearean plays 'Richard III', 'Hamlet' and 'King Lear'.
This is probably a posthumous portrait of the famous actor by Reginald Eves ( 1876-1941), based on a photograph by William Cooke taken in Edinburgh in April 1904. Irving is shown with his head and shoulders facing slightly to the right and with his head turned towards the spectator. It is cropped, aiding the suggestion that it was based on a photograph.
