Fireworks in Hyde Park, July 26 1919
Peace Day was celebrated across England following the Treaty of Versailles, which was signed in June 1919 and officially signalled the end of World War I. In London a Victory Parade involving nearly 15,000 troops took place through the streets and various entertainments and concerts followed. The celebrations culminated in a lavish fireworks display in Hyde Park during the evening. In this oil painting the artist conveys the dramatic effect of the fireworks on the night sky.
