Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1907
A Street Scene in Chelsea
Thomas Dugdale painted this bird's-eye view of Chelsea Junction from the upper floor of a building on the corner of King's Road and Manresa Road, a popular site for artists' studios at that time.
Although the view is slightly obscured by a tree, the artist depicts the passing traffic and passers-by in considerable detail. As well as a private motor car, public transport is represented by an early motorbus with an open upper deck. It is recognisable as the number 11 route between Fulham Broadway and Liverpool Street Station.
Dugdale was a painter of portraits, as well as topographical and genre scenes. Born in Blackburn, Lancashire, he studied at art institutions in Britain and abroad, including the Manchester School of Art, the Royal College of Art and the Atelier Colarossi in Paris.
