Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1785-1790
The Thames at Millbank
This view is of Sullivan's boat-building yard and the group of houses at Millbank stairs, from where a ferry operated to Vauxhall. At the time of this painting Millbank was a pleasant riverside walk. On the Surrey shore the houses stretch as far as Vauxhall and in the distance is Lambeth Palace with the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral beyond. This section of the Thames was popular with artists who often depicted the picturesque wind-blown trees, which can be seen here in the middle distance, at the end of the river path.
