Joseph George Holman (1764-1817) as Chamont in Otway's 'The Orphan'
Joseph George Holman was one of the leading actors of his day. He first appeared as Chamont in Thomas Otway's 'The Orphan' at Covent Garden in 1785 and this is one of several portraits of him in that role.
Holman is portrayed here in the Windsor uniform which was instituted by George III as a private uniform for use at court in c. 1779. As one of the King's Actors, Holman may have been entitled to wear it on the stage. The costume worn by Holman indicates a date of about 1785.
