Brickmakers
This print, by the artist Frank Brangwyn, is believed to depict workers employed at George Wright's East Acton Brick Works. The factory's large size and advanced methods made it Acton's most important brickworks. The works were near Frank Brangwyn's home and studio in Queen's Walk, Hammersmith.
Although born in Belgium, Frank Brangwyn was based in London. He had studied with William Morris and the two men shared similar values and views, including sympathy for the ordinary worker. Brangwyn's drawing style was based on strong lines and the expressive use of light and shade. Here it perfectly conveys the physical strength of the working brickmakers.
