The Drinking Well in Hyde Park
The servant on the right wears a lascar uniform and a turban and holds a parasol. He is waiting on a party of women and children in Hyde Park. Parish records, newspapers, literature and images like this one show the presence of Indian people in 18th century London. The first Indians to arrive in Britain were brought over by officers of the East India Company to serve in their households or to wait on them during the long sea voyage from East to West. These servants were more or less treated as enslaved people.
