Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1952
Sunlight in Trafalgar Square, 1952
Richards used Trafalgar Square as the subject of numerous prints throughout the 1950s and 60s. This print stemmed from a painting the artist made for the Arts Council exhibition ’60 Paintings for 51’. It incorporates the square's best-known features: pigeons, the fountain, the bronze lions surrounding the base of Nelson's Column and the vista down Whitehall to Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster.
