Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1760
A View of the Gardens at Carlton House in Pall Mall, a Palace of Her Royal Highness the Princess Dowager of Wales.
'A View of the Gardens at Carlton House in Pall Mall, a Palace of Her Royal Highness the Princess Dowager of Wales.', by Woollett, c. 1760. Gardeners sweep and pile leaves in the foreground. A man with a scythe stands before a pond, a small temple and statuary in the background. The gardens of Carlton House were laid out for the Prince of Wales by William Kent in the 1730s in the new informal style. This was one of a number of prints of aristocratic gardens published by Tinney from the 1740s onwards, designed to appeal not just to their owners but the middle classes who visited them - an increasingly large market.
