Church Ablaze, World War Two
This linocut shows two firemen fighting a blaze that is consuming a London church and a building next to it. Little is known about the artist except that he was a Polish airman billeted in Leamington Spa in Warwickshire during World War II. He may have been one of the 20,000 Polish servicemen who came to Britain after the fall of France in 1940. By the end of the war, nearly a quarter of a million men in the Polish armed forces were serving under British command.
