Archaeology — Late Bronze Age (900BC-700BC)
Mould, sword mould
Fragments of clay mould for the production of a sword with a leaf-shaped blade. Found during archaeological excavations of a settlement site at South Hornchurch. On loan from Hertfordshire Archaeological Trust (object number: RNH96 (HO/CP-96)[5034]<18>).
The fragments are from the outer wrap of the sword mould. The impressions of the bast used to bind the inner valves is visible. Based on their dimensions and shape I think they are most likely from the tip of the blade rather than the hilt end. (Dr Sophia Adams)
