The Balance of Justice
Hanging scene: the weight of 13 mutinous sailors is countered on a balance by the dead Joseph Wall, Governor of Goree, finally convicted for a murder committed in 1782. BM catalogue 9845. The publisher adds to his address: "Folios of Caractatures lent out for the Evening" and to the title: "NB: in a few days will be published the Old Gunner lashed to the Shrouds".
Joseph Wall was hanged at Newgate on 29 January 1802 for the murder of a soldier who was flogged to death without a trial under Wall's orders on the island of Goree off the coast of the Gambia. The sailors had carried out a mutiny on HMS Temeraire in December 1801 and several of the mutineers were tried and sentenced to death. They were executed at Portsmouth on 15 and 19 January 1802.
