Need to know

What happens when places we know change? Landscapes shape our sense of belonging and identity, but market forces and the need for new housing eat away at their fabric, disrupting our sense of place when they are remade and tidied up around us.

As the birthplace of Henry VIII and home to the Royal Observatory and Prime Meridian, Greenwich is known for its maritime and royal connections. Yet, visitors rarely discover the area’s fascinating history of industrial and maritime heritage, including the manufacture of underwater cables that provided the first transatlantic communication.

Nicola White, an influencer and mudlark whose YouTube content has attracted over 20 million views, is prominently featured in the film. The London riverbank is a source of comfort and exploration for Nicola as she discovers objects from the past. To her, this landscape is like being surrounded by “voices from the past”. But, as steel and glass buildings rise around her, Nicola faces the threat of losing access to this place forever.

Filmed over six years, Time and Tide: Steel, Grit and Glass explores personal identity and belonging through the eyes of those impacted by a changing landscape along the river Thames.
