Becoming more Welcoming
The Museum Development England partnership has commissioned a research exercise to inform a new national and area programme aimed at encouraging museums to embrace equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI).
In response to the recommendations in the below report, MDL will:
- continue to offer our Diversity Matters grants
- work with Museum Development South East to devise a new skills-sharing series between February 2026 and March 2027
- create new webpages with resources and case studios for museums to use
- continue to work with ACE and MDE to devise a new introductory training session
In partnership with Museum Development South East (MDSE), MDL are running a new skills-sharing series for our museums.
MDL have also developed resources and case studies to support museums on their journey to becoming more welcome, inclusive, diverse and equitable across a range of areas.

Previous programme
Between April 2020 – March 2024, Museum Development London ran a seven-session training series ‘Developing an Inclusive Museum’ to support London’s museums to be more inclusive across all areas of their museum practice.
Over four years, 72 participants from 48 unique non-national, non-NPO museums have participated in the programme, representing 45% of MDL’s total target museums.
