Set in an area marked by medieval markets, public executions, and centuries of change, explore a part of the city with a remarkable past. Within a market that has traded for 800 years, a new chapter begins
Smithfield began as a Roman cemetery, became the site of medieval markets and public executions, and was once home to the lively Bartholomew Fair. It even inspired Charles Dickens.
Now, you can experience a new chapter in the story of Smithfield. The museum’s historic home, the Victorian General Market, opened in 1883, designed by Sir Horace Jones, the architect behind Tower Bridge and Leadenhall Market. After more than a century of trading, the market closed in the 1990s and the building fell into disrepair.
Following a decade-long restoration, the building is opening to the public once again. Step inside and you’ll find that the market itself is part of the experience – a remarkable and beautiful piece of London’s history brought back to life alongside the stories and collections of the museum.
