Engraved half portrait of Elizabeth Brownrigg, executed for cruelty & murder at Tyburn, 14th September 1767. Elizabeth had been convicted of beating her young female apprentices and the beating to death of the15 year old apprentice Mary Clifford. The engraving depicts Elizabeth in the condemned cell at Newgate prison, holding a book, possibly a Bible. She was 47 at the time of her execution. The portrait featured in the publication 'Wonderful Characters: Comprising Memoirs and Anecdotes of the Most Remarkable Persons of Every Age and Nation' Vol. III, by Henry Wilson. [J. Robins and Co. Albion Press, London, 1821]. The engraver was Robert Cooper.
