Printed Ephemera — 1822-09-20
Hodgsons New Front of Covent Garden Theatre
Coloured toy theatre sheet depicting the new Covent Garden theatre stage front built in 1813.
This is one of the earliest toy theatre scaled prints of a proscenium arch and one of the few surviving stage fronts by the Hodgsons. The dome of the Covent Garden Theatre was installed in 1813 and further alterations were made in 1819. It is likely Hodgson sent his artist to the theatre sometime in the intervening years, although this print was not published until 1822.
