Printed Ephemera — 1914-02
Photograph, photographic print
Image appearing to show Florence Evelyn Smith with a fellow Suffragette listening to a speech by Emmeline Pankhurst from the upstairs balcony of the Glebe Place, Chelsea home of Gladys and Dr Schütze on 21st February 1914. At the time of her appearance Emmeline was on release from prison under licence under the terms of the 'Cat and Mouse Act.' Although not officially allowed to appear in public Emmeline was smuggled into Glebe House with one of her bodyguards in defiance of the authorities, and announced her intended appearance on the balcony in the Times newspaper that morning. The caption below the image identifies Florence as the Suffragette who disguised, as Emmeline Pankhurst was arrested by the police when leaving Campden Hill Square believing she was Emmeline. The typed caption beneath dates that event to 10th February 1914. The speech at Glebe Place was on the 21st February.
It is possible Florence Smith was a member of Emmeline's bodyguard.
The caption also refers to the confusion caused by the WSPU using the abbreviation Mrs F. E. Smith to refer to Mrs Florence Evelyn Smith, when it could also refer to Mrs Frederick Edwin Smith, the "wife of the well-known KC and MP".
