Printed Ephemera — 1913-10
Photograph, photographic print
Photograph of Emmeline Pankhurst giving a speech at a meeting in Madison Square Garden, New York on her release from detention in Ellis Island, October 1913.
On her arrival in the USA Emmeline was barred from entering New York harbour by American immigration officials and detained for several days at Ellis Island. The American Suffragettes Alice Paul and Alva Belmont hired lawyers to represent her case and President Wilson personally approved her entry on appeal, reversing the previous order to deport her as ‘undesirable alien on grounds of moral turpitude.’ She conducted her first speech at Madison Square Garden 21st October.
The image, previously in a photo album compiled by Nurse Pine has been captioned by her 'The night of her release from Ellis Isle meeting got up by Mr Beaumont'.
