Women's Right to Serve March
The Women's Right to Serve March, 17th July 1915
The image depicts a woman dressed as Queen Elizabeth I, astride a horse led by a costumed jester forming part of the historical pageant of the procession. Behind on horseback are three women in colonial miltary uniforms, particiating in the 'overseas dominions pageant' part of the procession.
Organised by the Suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst at the request of Lloyd George the March was intended to encourage women to sign up for 'war work'. Along the route were 50 tables where women could register for war-work. Despite the driving rain the event attracted mass crowds of both participants and spectators.
