Captain Gonne arrested
Press image depicting the arrest of Captain Charles M. Gonne during the Suffragette demonstration, known as Black Friday, November 18, 1910. The image was published in the Daily Mirror.
Gonne was a member of the Men’s Political Union for Women’s Enfranchisement, this militant society was founded in 1910 by Victor Duval as a male counterpart of the Women's Social & Political Union.
Capt Charles Melvill Gonne (1862-1926), Royal Artillery, was the author of ‘Hints on Horses’ (John Murray, 1904), an active suffragist, who supported his wife, a tax resister, and was a cousin of Maud Gonne, the Irish nationalist heroine.
The image was previously in a photo album compiled by Nurse Pine. Below the image she has added the caption 'sympathiser arrested Major Gonne (RA)'. (his rank has been incorrectly assigned by Pine.
