Raid on Buckingham Palace
Suffragette delegation en route to Buckingham Palace, 21st May 1914. In the centre of the crowd, shielded by her bodyguards is Emmeline Pankhurst wearing a hat with a white feather. The women are accompanied by a police escort.
The image, originally in a photograph album compiled by Nurse Pine has been annotated by her 'Raid on Buckingham Palace. The 'attackers' on there way, May 21 1914'. She has also added a 'x' against the figure of Emmeline Pankhurst whose white feather can just be seen at the heart of the group.
The press image was one in a series depicting events on May 21st 1914 when a group of Suffragettes attempted to petition King George V. The King's refusal to receive the Suffragette deputation resulted in a fierce struggle between the women and the police. Sixty six women, including Emmeline Pankhurst, and two men were arrested outside the Palace gates.
