Mrs Dacre Fox
Postcard portrait of Mrs Dacre Fox (1878-1961), Suffragette prisoner.
Dacre Fox was born Nora Doherty in Dublin. She moved to Teddington with her family as a child. In 1912, now married, Dacre Fox joined the Women’s Social and Political Union. In 1913 she became General Secretary of the WSPU, and led the campaign against the force feeding of imprisoned suffragettes. Dacre Fox was herself imprisoned three times for her suffragette activities. She continued to campaign with the WSPU, who adopted a patriotic stance during World War I. Dacre Fox began to voice increasingly anti-German sentiments. She later became a member of the British Union of Fascists and was imprisoned for her fascist activities during World War II.
The photograph was taken by Lena Connell, a portrait photographer who was a member of the Hampstead Branch of the WSPU.
