Suffragette Procession June 17, 1911
Postcard with photograph captioned 'Suffragette Procession June 17, 1911'. Two men carry a banner which reads 'We Follow' with an image of three ships on it. Behind them are women in dresses with a cross on the breast. In front can be seen the white cloak of Marjorie Annan Bryce, on horseback dressed as Joan of Arc, patron saint of the suffragettes
The Women's Coronation procession was organised by 28 suffrage societies, including the Women's Social and Political Union, on 17 June 1911. Held a week before the coronation of George V, it aimed to enlist the support of the new King in getting the Conciliation Bill in favour of female suffrage through parliament. The procession included a 'Famous Women' pageant, in which suffragettes dressed as notable women from the past.
