Printed Ephemera — 1907-1914
Is this Right?
Pro-suffrage propaganda postcard captioned 'Is this Right?'. Designed by the artist Mary Lowndes the cartoon depicts a working woman carrying a basket on her back in the rain alking to a man carrying an umbrella marked 'Franchise'. Beside the image is written 'The Open Market'. The postcard is headed 'Is this Right'. Below the caption is printed as a conversation between the woman and 'the voter' male. The woman asks 'Why Can't I have an umbrella too'. To which the male replies 'You Can't you ought to stop at home'. The woman counter replies 'Sto at home indeed! I have my living to earn'.
Formed in 1907, the Artists' Suffrage League produced posters, postcards and other visual material to promote the Votes for Women message of the non-militant National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies. As well as being Chairman of the League Mary Lowndes also designed many of the banners used by the NUWSS in processions and demonstrations.
