Suffragette Charlotte Despard
One of a collection of 7 photographs of Mrs. Despard. Photograph of Charlotte Despard (1844-1939) with a group of women. She wears her trademark black mantilla.
Despard's brother was John French, field marshal and first earl of Ypres. Despard married, but had no children. Despard originally served as joint Honorary Secretary of the Women's Social and Political Union. In 1907 she broke away from the WSPU as a result of policy differences with the Pankhursts, and founded militant suffrage group the Women's Freedom League. The WFL encouraged its members to take part in non-violent resistance, such as evading the Census of 1911 and refusing to pay taxes until women were given the vote.
