Votes for Women; Band of the Women's Social and Political Union
Postcard with photograph of the Women's Social and Political Union drum and fife band. Above is printed 'Votes For Women' and below is 'Band of the Women's Social and Political Union' and the organisation's address.
The band was established in May 1909 to generate publicity for the Women's Exhibition at the Prince's Skating Rink in Knightsbridge. Mary Leigh, the drum major, is on the far right. Members wore a uniform in the WSPU colours of purple, white and green. The band often accompanied suffragette processions and demonstrations.
