Printed Ephemera
Christabel Pankhurst
Oval photographic portrait in sepia tones attached to a brown postcard. Beneath is printed 'Christabel Pankhurst'.
Christabel Pankhurst (1880-1958) had a first class degree in law, but as a woman was unable to practise as a lawyer. Instead she became Organizing Secretary of the Women's Social and Political Union, the suffrage organisation founded in 1903 by her mother Emmeline Pankhurst. The two women led the WSPU, using militant tactics, such as heckling politicians and smashing windows, to campaign for female enfranchisement and to gain publicity for their cause.
