Printed Ephemera — 1908-1909
Miss Christabel Pankhurst
Postcard with photographic portrait of Christabel Pankhurst (1880-1958) Below is printed 'Miss Christabel Pankhurst. Women's Social and Political Union' and the organisation's address.
Christabel Pankhurst had a first class degree in law, but as a woman was unable to practise as a lawyer. Instead she became Organizing Secretary of the WSPU, the suffrage organisation founded in 1903 by her mother Emmeline Pankhurst. The two women led the WSPU, using militant tactics, such as heckling politicians and smashing windows, to campaign for female enfranchisement and to gain publicity for their cause. Christabel’s talent for public speaking gained them many supporters. She was imprisoned several times for her suffragette activities.
This photograph was taken by Lizzie Caswall Smith, who specialised in portraits of theatrical and society subjects.
