Printed Ephemera
The Hon. Mrs Haverfield
Postcard with photographic image of Evelina Haverfield (1867-1920) on horseback. Beneath is printed 'The Hon. Mrs. Haverfield as Marshall for the 'Votes for women' Demonstration, June 18th'.
The daughter of a baron, Haverfield was born in Scotland. She was probably a member of the Sherborne branch of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies during the 1890s. In 1908 she joined the Women's Social and Political Union, was a regular speaker, and gave generous donations to their cause. Haverfield became organiser of the Paddington branch of the WSPU. Haverfield used her horsemanship skills to play an effective part in suffragette protests, and is shown here as marshall during a 'Votes for Women' demonstration on June 18th, 1910. By April 1914 she had left the main WSPU to join the breakaway East London Federation of the WSPU, and also joined the United Suffragists. During World War I she helped to establish the Woman's Emergency Corps, then founded the Women's Volunteer Reserve. She was based in Serbia and Russia during the war.
