General Drummond

Postcard with photographic portrait of Flora Drummond (1879-1949). Beneath is printed 'General Drummond, The National Women's Social and Political Union' and the address of the organisation. The 'National' has been crossed out in red pen and 'Lizz Ca[illegible]' handwritten below. Flora Drummond was one of the original members of the WSPU. In 1906 she moved with the Pankhursts from Manchester to London and became a paid organiser for the campaign. She was imprisoned 9 times for her suffragette activities, once serving three weeks for chaining herself to the railings of 10 Downing Street. Nickamed the 'General' by her fellow suffragettes, Drummond was a keen horsewoman and enjoyed heading WSPU processions dressed in a peaked cap and epaulettes. The photograph was taken by Lizzie Caswall Smith, a photographer who made a number of suffragette portraits.
