Votes for Women. Tennessee Lady Cook.
Photographic portrait captioned 'Votes For Women. Tennessee Lady Cook'.
Tennessee Celeste Claflin was born in Ohio in the US in 1845. She worked as a clairvoyant, then moved to New York City together with her sister Victoria Woodhull Claflin in 1868. The sisters were interested in suffragism and social reform. They befriended millionaire Cornelius Vanderbilt, who helped them to establish the first firm of female Wall Street stock brokers. From 1870 the sisters published ‘Woodhull and Claflin's Weekly’, a scandal sheet which advocated both women’s rights and free love. They were also involved with the National Women's Suffrage Assocation. In 1877 the sisters came to live in England, where they established more respectable reputations. Tennessee married the baronet Sir Francis Cook, an art collector, and Victoria married the banker John Biddulph Martin.
