Die, trade token die matrix
A cuboid iron reverse die for a half-penny trade token issued by Richard Washbourne of the Tilt Yard (King Street, subsequently Horse Guards Parade) Westminster, dated 1666. The die bears the inverse inscription: ‘TILT . YARD . SVTTLER . 1666 = HIS HALFE PENNY R.A.W. The die has chamfered edges and a circular ‘striking face’ which shows signs of heavy use with a noticeable flaw by the letter ‘H’ in ‘HIS’.
The museum has two tokens produced from this die: NN19383 and 96.66/1165. Both show evidence of terminal die-state but the flaw is considerably more marked in 96.66/1165 which suggests that the fissure had widened over the die’s working life and it was struck shortly before the die was discarded.
