Letter

Letter from a collection of at least 122 letters, press cuttings, articles by and relating to Helen Fraser. Letter dated 10th October 1917, and written on three sheets of paper. Written on headed paper from the National American Woman Suffrage Association, and signed from Carrie Chapman Catt [?]. The letter is addressed to Mrs Fawcett, and concerns the plans of Helen Fraser to come to America. The writer is asking that she gives some terms of when she is planning to come, as they very much wish to have her arrive in time to speak at the National Convention in Washington. The writer goes on to write about America becoming increasigly military, and expresses her opinion that the situation is very difficult due to the array of opposition to the war. She writes that the Association are engaged in financing a Woman's Hospital Unit, but that they do not yet have the funds for this. She also writes about the fight for suffrage, and says that the war is preventing people from being able to think about it. She writes of what she has learnt from women in some states being given the vote, and suggests that once women have been granted suffrage in Britain, that groups of women are established to report on the status of women in the law, and what needs to be done to "establish corrective legislation", for example regarding property rights.
