A view of the canal, Chinese Building, Rotunda, etc in Ranelagh Gardens with the masquerade
Masquerages balls were originally a type of private aristocratic entertainment, but with the appearance at Ranelagh it attratced a wider middle-class audience. The Ambulalor noted that Ranelagh was not very famous until the masquerades in which everyone had to be disguised in fancy dress. The Chinese House which appears in the background was very appropriate due to the vogue for Chinese dress. Eating, drinking, gambling dancing wet on all night.
