1st Northern Surplus Labour Group
Cartoon no 89 of the Kibbo Kift cartoons, 28 September 1928. This marks the formation of the 1st Northern Surplus Labour Group at Gateshead. Surplus Labour was Hargrave's term for unemployment, and the central figure represents unemployed coal miners. The group was set up during Hargrave's visit to the North in 1928, but was short-lived.
The Kibbo Kift cartoons were drawn by John Hargrave, printed by Ruth Hargrave on an opalograph and sent out weekly to subscribers, 1927- 1928, in an effort to raise funds and generate new supporters.
