Banner, suffrage banner
This banner was designed for the Chelsea branch of the Women's Social and Political Union by Herman Ross. The banner was one of several dramatically unveiled at a WSPU meeting held at the Queen's Hall on 17th June 1908 in preparation for Women's Sunday, the first major WSPU procession through London on 21 June. The Votes for Women newspaper noted that the unveiling of the Chelsea banner by Mrs Jason Kerr caused 'much amusement' amongst those at the meeting.
By 1911 the Chelsea branch of the WSPU had opened a shop at 308 King's Road for the sale of suffragette merchandise. The shop's basement became a workshop for the design and production of campaign banners.
