Linney wrote of this scene: "Beyond the town bridge the stream passes by old-fashioned residences, and I caught a peep through a gap into the stable-yard of an ancient inn …these residences are truly charming. Some have delightful gardens with coquettish arbours and summer houses with windowed embrasures above the slow moving water; lilac and laburnum flecked their blossom by the bank shaking down a fluttering rain of petals".
