Valance, bed base valance
Part of the original hangings bought with the Ockwells Manor bed. The bed hangings suspended from a rod and sliding rings were usually made from say (twill woven wool) or taffety (a heavy silk). These were not only decorative, but provided insulation from the cold and a degree of privacy for the occupant. Beds often had a number of mattresses supported either by cords covered with canvas, or with wooden slats. The mattresses were filled with straw, flock (wool) and feather, depending on the status of the owner.
